Powerlunching with Naomi MacDougall
Earlier this week I had the pleasure of powerlunching with one of my besties/fellow freelancer Naomi MacDougall, who brought over takeout from Finch’s and a pretty bouquet of roses. #romance
A design grad from ECU, you can find Naomi’s work on her website, on most bookstore shelves, or pulling in Alcuin Awards. I don’t open these real-world-cancelling blinds for just anyone, so thought I’d also use the visit for my own blogging advantage and conduct an interview.

What do you do?freelance print designer/book designer
How long have you been freelancing full-time?2.5 years
What’s your workstation set-up?MacBook Pro linked to a LaCie 324 monitor and a tablet mouse.
A lot of people find the switch to self employment scary. How did you find it?it was a pretty easy transition for me actually. The panic of not having a regular pay check is a good motivator.
Are you broke? (Seriously you travel more than almost anyone I know.)When you freelance cash flow is tricky. So when I get paid for 5 jobs at once I feel rich and decide to do stuff like go to Mexico for a month… but then there are months where there is no money coming in and it’s terrifying. I’ve almost got it figured out now but yes, I am currently broke, although not starving.
What is your favourite / least fav part about it?Sleeping in! / Never having a day off.
Any projects you’re particularly proud of?I’m one of those people who hates everything I’ve done as soon as it’s done. I can always see a way it could have been better after the fact. But I’m pretty happy with Grant’s book cover, The Lonely End of the Rink.
You recently started working out of another office with other humans. How has this affected your work flow/productivity/sanity?It has helped to not have the distractions of my house so productivity has increased. It’s also nice to have someone other than my cat to talk to.
How long have you gone without talking to another human?Probs only one day. I’m far too extroverted to deal with much longer.
Any hot tips/advice for people wanting to enter the field of book design?Become a web/interactive designer instead. There’s more money!
Any tips for cheating on taxes?Yes, but it’s too boring to discuss.
I am pretty sure I don’t drink enough water. How do I know?!pee dark yellow? = not enough water. [Ed: I am now positive I do not drink enough water.]
What’s your power outfit for working at home?Leggings & sweater burrito wrapped with blanket.
Do you flush the toilet EVERY time you pee?You know, I actually do… but I don’t know why. Maybe all those years of living with an outhouse as a child means I never take a flush toilet for granted. [Ed: I hope you have a low-flush model, water waster!]
What’s the most disgusting meal you’ve made multiple times due to work/time constraints after telling yourself you’ll never eat that again?tortilla chips and mayonnaise mixed with hot sauce (don’t judge!)
As well, you’re about to leave full-time freelancing for a sweet new gig at a magazine… any last words?nope! I’m in complete denial.
Lastly… what are you wearing?Striped shirt: Oak & Fort; Cheap Monday jeans: stolen from ex-bf
